Honoring Nancy Zieman and Her Retirement

If it wasn’t for Nancy Zieman, sewing may not exist today. She and other Sewing Celebrities kept the vibrancy alive when sewing was no longer a necessity. We just wanted to reach out and say Thank you Nancy for all you have done.

“Even though I have only met Nancy once, I know she has a big heart. She and I have both added to our family via adoption and that tells me just how truly caring and big hearted she is.” ~LaQuinta Schum

Nancy Zieman

Who is Nancy Zieman?

Nancy Zieman is host and executive producer of Sewing With Nancy and founder of Nancy’s Notions, a direct mail business. She’s an author and a designer for The McCall Pattern Company and Clover Needlecraft.

What is Sewing with Nancy?

The first Sewing With Nancy program aired on cable TV in 1982. Initially, the programs were videotaped in Nancy’s living room with a camera crew of one person and 13-hour taping days! In the early years, Nancy Zieman ran a one-woman show, developing the scripts, making the samples, and taping the programs.

Today, Nancy still writes the scripts, yet it’s a team effort to plan the programming, develop the samples, and write and illustrate the books. Nancy frequently quips, “The show should really be called Sewing With Nancy, Donna, Kate, Pat, Diane, Laure, Lois, and Diane.” For the past 20 years, Wisconsin Public Television in Madison, Wisconsin has been Nancy’s partner in television production with Laurie Gorman serving as the director for the past 19 years.

Thank you Nancy!

New Baby Lock Sewing Machines: Destiny II and Jazz

New sewing machines from Baby Lock were announced this month! Have you checked them out yet? Whether you’re in the market for a new sewing machine or just interested in what the latest technology looks like, you can find either one at Let’s Sew.

Baby Lock Destiny II sewing machines

New Sewing Machines: Destiny II

Before you read on, we want you to know that the Destiny II comes with a 9-1/2″ X 9-1/2″ hoop! That hoop size has been heavily requested by our customers in the past. As a result of the  Destiny II being released, it’s finally available! Whoohoo!

How is the Destiny II sewing machine different than the Destiny I?

This is probably the main question being asked on Baby Lock’s social media pages. The biggest difference is that the Destiny II includes a few features that don’t come standard on the Destiny (read on for information about the Destiny I update).

Here is Baby Lock’s official response from their Facebook page: “The Destiny II has 20 new embroidery designs, 9.5″x9.5″ hoop and new IQ designer features. It highlights the key features found on the current Destiny. To learn more about the Destiny II and the features:…”

What We’re Excited About Most

That 9-1/2″ X 9-1/2″ hoop! Kidding, sort of. As we said before, the 9-1/2″ X 9-1/2″ hoop size has been in demand from our customers for a few months. We actually brought the lack of that size being available to the attention of the president of Baby Lock, so we are definitely glad to see it as part of this new sewing machine and upgrade package. Yet another instance of this wonderful, family-owned sewing machine company truly listening to its customers.

In addition to the convenient new hoop, we’re really excited to see the color sorting option. You can now set thread colors for a design and stitch out multiple areas at one time. Check out this nine minute video for a demo of all the new features:

Upgrade Available

If you already have a Destiny sewing and embroidery machine, an upgrade is available that will include all the new features plus the new 9-1/2″ X 9-1/2″ hoop! We are currently taking pre-orders for the upgrade.

New Sewing Machines: Baby Lock Jazz

Baby Lock Jazz sewing machines

First of all, this machine has a great overall look. It’s a classic looking sewing machine with an easy threading guide and a large work space. In addition to that, the Baby Lock Jazz sewing and quilting machine helps make quilting easier with several features previously found only on sewing machines in a higher price range.

A full 12″ of work space lets you work on large quilts with less frustration with the Baby Lock Jazz. The area in between the body of the machine and the needle is perfect for rolled up quilts.

Check out the rest of this machine’s jazzy sewing and quilting features in this video.

What We’re Excited About Most:

The price. Baby Lock has priced the Jazz at $1,299 MSRP. That’s a lot of sewing machine for a little amount of money, and doesn’t take into account special promotions or bundles that we may have throughout the season!

Price is especially relevant when you think about all the features the machine includes compared to other sewing machines in its price range. While keeping the price economical, the Baby Lock Jazz sewing machine keeps up in features with some of the higher priced models. As a result, it has already been one of our most asked about new sewing machines.

These two, new sewing machines will be arriving soon! If you would like to pre-order the Destiny II, the upgrade for the Destiny I or the Jazz, please call or visit us during normal business hours.

Stop back by tomorrow for more information on two more new machines from Baby Lock: the Presto and the Coronet!

Tired, Old and Unwanted Fabric Drive

Tired, Old and Unwanted Fabric Drive banner

Bring us your Tired, Old, your Unwanted….fabrics!

As in previous years, your clean and unwanted fabric is worth a discount during our fabric drive. For every 1 lb. of fabric you bring in, you’ll receive a 1% off coupon (max 30% per coupon) that will be valid until the end of the year – December 31, 2016.

Your tired, old and unwanted fabric will be given to Tri-State charities to help promote sewing and creativity in our community. Follow us on Facebook to see which charity your fabrics helped!

Example of how it works:

You discover 70lbs of fabric in your grandmother’s attic that she no longer wants. It’s uncut (no holes cut out of the middles) and clean. You packed it up and bring it into the store where we weigh it.

You’ll receive two 30% off coupons and one 10% off coupon (30% is the max amount we give per coupon. So 30% + 30% + 10% = 70% off total.) that you can use, one coupon per purchase, until Dec. 31, 2016.

The Rules:

Some discount exclusions apply. Discount cannot be combined with any other offer. Discount is taken off MSRP on total invoice. Please, whole cloth only. Short, cut pieces, scraps, or trimmings will be accepted but not weighed. Please call or visit the store for details.

10 Items Under $10 at Let’s Sew

Happy 10th of October! Today we’re highlighting 10 items under $10 at Let’s Sew.

1. Steam-A-SeamSteam A Seam

Oh, Steam-A-Seam, how easy you make hemming and applique! For under $10, you can purchase several yards worth of Steam-A-Seam 2  or Lite Steam-A-Seam 2. Steam-A-Seam is essentially a roll of fusible tape that bonds temporarily or permanently depending on whether or not you iron it.

Cut a piece the length of your seam, adhere it between your fabrics and it will keep them together as you sew! No more shifting knits or silks! Bonus: it’s practically invisible, so it won’t look bad when used with laces or trims.

2. Happy Haunting Trick or Treat Bag Panel by Deborah Edwards Northcott Studio

Trick or Treat panelThere are instructions on how to make this adorable trick or treat bag right on the panel from Northcott’s Happy Haunting collection. They have also made a wonderful, instructional Youtube video on how to create the bag, including how to insert the lights (also available at Let’s Sew!). We also created our own store sample and put a video of it on our Instagram!

3. The Sew & Go Messenger Bag, A Sew and Go Pattern by FishSticks

FishSticks messenger bag patternWe love bags. We love bag patterns. We love that this bag pattern is under $10 and has a top flap made from Renaissance Ribbons ribbons. Enough said.

4. 6-packs of Tulip Permanent Fabric Markers

Fabric MarkersAvailable in either primary or neon colors, these permanent fabric markers are some of the best available. Good fabric markers will usually cost more than $2 a piece, so in packs of six, these are a steal! Try them with the Color Me collection by Hayley Crouse for Michael Miller.

5. Creative Notions Advanced Driver Set

Creative Notions advanced driver setMake changing out your sewing machine feet easier with this handy tool set! For under $10, you get a tiny flat head (also great for removing your needle plate) and a long-handled screwdriver with a rubber seal around it, to keep it in place around the screw.

6. Dritz Seam Roll

Seam RollThis should be a part of everyone’s basic sewing supplies. A seam roll allows you to press seams that are on a narrow area, such as sleeves or pant legs. Without it, you press the edges of your fabric along with the seam and create unsightly folds. And no one needs that.

7. Assorted purse hardware

purse hardware at Let's SewDid we mention that we like sewing bags around here? You can find plenty of hardware for under $10 on our walls. Handles, buckles, magnetic snaps and more are available!

8. Reflective/Safety Ribbon by the yard

The metallic stripes on the bright, neon ribbon reflect any source of light such as headlights as you trick or treat  It’s also great for joggers, construction workers or bike riders!

9. Bobbin Buddies / Stitcher’s Rubber Grips

bobbin-buddiesWe really should have just taken a photo of our cash register area. Most of the impulse buys you’ll find there are under $10 and extremely helpful with everyday sewing. Bobbin Buddies (top photos) keeps your bobbin with your thread and the bobbin from unwinding.

Rubber-ThimblesStitcher’s Rubber Grips (bottom photos) come in three different sizes and are made of natural rubber, meaning you’ll get a customize fit that won’t slip off your finger like metal or even plastic.

10. (Is a Cop Out… ) Vote for Washington!

Vote-for-Wash Our store mascot is in a contest!

Voting in the Evansville Courier & Press Pet Calendar competition is going on now. Votes are $0.25 a piece and all proceeds go toward the Courier & Press Newspapers in Education fund. Voting slips are available in the daily paper or we have a few printed at the store.

We think he’s worth at least $10, if not a few more.

All products in this post are available in store or by phone order as of October 10, 2015.

Scissor Sharpening at Let’s Sew!

Bee Sharp scissor and knife sharpening service is now at Let's Sew!

Have your fabric scissors wondered into the kitchen lately? Have they conveniently been sitting right there when you needed to clip a piece of paper? If so, they may be dull and no longer precise enough to cut fabric.

Luckily, Let’s Sew has partnered with local scissors and knife sharpening service, Bee Sharp!

How It Works

Just bring in your item the next time you’re shopping with us, fill out the drop off form, and deposit either cash or a check. All items must be deposited by the first Saturday of the month and will be returned the following Wednesday.

Want to keep up with Bee Sharp at their on-site locations? Click here to follow the service on Facebook.

Fabric scissors should not be used to cut pattern pieces, ribbons or trims of any kind. Have two pairs of scissors handy when sewing: one for fabric, the other for general craft purposes.

Italian Shirting Is Here!

Italian Shirting Fabric at Let's SewWhat once held bolts of heavy, winter corduroy fabrics now display light, summery shirting in declaration that summer is here at Let’s Sew!

Italian Shirting FabricsItalian shirting is wonderful for summer garment sewing because they are lightweight, often with a dobby weave or even a cotton lawn texture. Their airy, loose weaves help keep you cool in hot-weather while still looking well-dressed.

The three examples (above) from our wide selection of Italian shirting highlight some of the different weaves available: dobby with metallic thread, leno dobby, and jacquard. Because the different weaves are more complex to make than basic cottons, these fabrics tend to be more luxurious and reserved for nicer garments.

Perfect Fabric for Tailored Shirts

Speaking of well-dressed, Dexter – a friend and personal trainer to owner LaQuinta – stopped in wearing a shirt made at the shop from our Italian shirting fabric.

Dexter - Italian Shirt FabricPerfectly tailored to his build, Dexter’s shirt highlights the fabric in every way. This particular one is embroidered with a star design and the fabric does well with the stiff collar and sleeve interfacing.

Tailored from K3522, the shirt fabric and the buttons are still available! Stop in anytime during our regular hours and we’ll help you pick out the perfect, Italian shirting for you next summer project.

A Guide to Fabric Marking Tools

A Guide to Marking Tools for SewingA conversation arose the other morning at Let’s Sew centered around the question: what marking tool should you use on dark or delicate fabrics?

The question of which fabric marking tool will work the best is a common question at Let’s Sew. There are several different options out on the market and we stock most of them.
